[Spice Island]
The Spice Island of the
Caribbean, Grenada even features a nutmeg on its national flag.
Measuring just 21 miles by 12 miles, the island also produces cloves,
cinnamon, allspice and mace, and possesses an alluring combination of
rugged, rainforested hinterland and a coastline dotted with secluded
coves and stretches of dazzling sandy beach. Grenada was named by
Spanish sailors homesick for the mountains of Southern Spain. The
French then the British held the island until independence in
1974. In 1983, a US `friendly invasion' stabilised the country
after left-wing leader Maurice Bishop was imprisoned and executed by
members of his own People's Revolutionary Government, since when all has
been quiet.
