Barbados - the
Caribbean's easternmost island - became known as "Little
England" because of the large number of English who settled there,
and the over-330 years of British rule. Bridgetown, the capital is full
of interesting and historic sites. It is crisscrossed with over 975
miles of paved roads making it easy to explore. Almost completely
surrounded by sandy beaches, the best being on the western or Caribbean
side, while the surfers' haunts are on the eastern or Atlantic side. For
the even more adventurous, Barbados has over 30 scuba diving sites, with
more than 10 undersea wrecks to choose from.
Almond
Beach
Actually two resorts, Almond Beach Club & Spa and Almond Beach
Village, both situated on the west or Gold Coast respectively 6 and 11
miles from the capital Bridgetown.
Almond Beach Village, with 330 rooms, is one of the island's biggest
resorts and packed with things for the whole family to do.

Sandy
Lane
With a reputation as legendary as that of Sandy Lane, it is
difficult to know how to improve such a hotel, renowned worldwide for
its impeccable service and the numbers of celebrity visitors who keep
returning. But the hotel has re-opened earlier this year, after a
multi-million dollar refit, bedrooms reduced from 120 to 112 including
16 suites and 2 penthouses, and retaining a large number of its
complement of over 400 staff.

The
Edgewater Inn
This small (20 rooms) eccentric property is situated on a small
peninsula overlooking a windswept bay on the Atlantic coast and
therefore a haunt of surfers and hermits rather than the beautiful
people of the west coast hotels. Luxury there isn't; but unique it
certainly is. Dating back to 1760, rumour has it is was once owned by a
pirate. If you wish to enjoy the peace to write a novel, or just avoid
the tourist crowds, this is the place, with views to die for over a
nine-mile unspoiled beach, or an 85-acre rainforest. And you might just
share a drink with the next Hemingway…
